A Wessler First…

So…we had our first Wessler First last Thursday.  Anna had the first grandchild.  And the first grandson.

We get the first broken arm.

Here’s how it happened.

I came home from work on Thursday and Tricia was still at the hospital.  I was going to take the girls to see the house once Abby finished her homework.  I was in the bedroom with Ellie changing out of my work clothes.  Ellie ran over to the bed signing “more” and “please” asking for me to toss her on the bed.  She really likes it when I hold her with her back to the bed and then drop her onto the comforter.

After getting dressed, I grabbed her and we played on the bed for a little bit.  One drop…two drops…three drops…

Snap.  I actually heard it.

At first, I convinced myself that she had just sprained her arm or cracked a joint.  But then, she wouldn’t move her arm to hold her milk.  She was fussy but not inconsolable.  I tried to rotate her wrist and she did NOT like that.

So, I called Tricia and told her I needed to go to the Emergency Room.

Once we go to the ER, Ellie was much better.  She ran around the exam room opening drawers and pulling on the door handle.  She was using her arm just fine.  I thought we were in the clear.

I was wrong.  Here is the x-ray

What you’re looking at is a “greenstick fracture” of the radius (the bone on the bottom/left” and a “buckle fracture” of the ulna (the bone on the top/right).  Poor little thing.  She was quite the trooper.

After the X-ray confirmed the break, they called the Orthopedic doctor on call.  He came in to cast Ellie’s arm.

Here’s Ellie and I after hearing the news:

And here we are getting ready for the casting:

Finally, here is the “bird’s-eye view” of the final product:

She’s doing very well and getting along just fine with the cast.  She’s figuring out how to eat and drink with one arm and a few fingertips.  It doesn’t seem to bother her – she just keeps right on truckin’ with this giant cast on her arm.  She’s got a mean left hook, though…I’ll tell you what!

So, I broke one of the girls…literally.  It was only a matter of time.

: )

  1. What a lovely green cast! Did Abigail get to sign it? Give her a big hug and kiss from us. And one for you too!

  2. That’s one tough little girl! Not letting that “green thing” slow her down! Hope she heals quickly and completely!

  3. She’s rocking that cast! 🙂 My parents popped my elbows out of socket twice, a babysitter did it two more times . . . these things happen 🙂
